All-Porcelain Bridges

A tooth-colored bridge may be made of both porcelain or metal, or, thanks to a newly available technology, it may be made entirely or porcelain.

Metal-and-porcelain bridges

In the past, porcelain bridges were always built upon a metal core. That was the only way they could have enough strength to withstand the tremendous biting forces that are exerted on all of your teeth. That metal core is what creates the dark blue line at the edge of many bridges.

The benefits of all-porcelain bridges

Recent breakthroughs in adhesives, combined with the development of stronger porcelain materials, allow us to make bridges entirely out of porcelain. All-porcelain bridges maintain a translucency that makes them hard to tell from natural teeth. Without metal, the problem of a dark line at the edge of the gums is eliminated. This allows us to place the edge of the bridge above the gumline, and that's healthier for your teeth and gums.  When you want to improve your smile, all-porcelain bridges are a beautiful and natural-looking choice.

 

CAD/CAM Restorations

When a tooth needs restoration, we can often use CAD/CAM technology. The letters "CAD/CAM" stand for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. We can use this technology to custom-design and fabricate tooth-colored restorations, crowns, onlays, inlays, or veneers, all in one appointment. CAD/CAM restorations are often the best choice for a healthy, beautiful, and natural-looking smile.

The procedure

  • Our first step is to numb the area to make you feel comfortable. Depending on the situation, we may also use a rubber dam to protect your mouth while we work.

  • We remove any decay and shape the tooth with the headpiece. 

  • Next a reflective powder is applied to the prepared tooth. This allows the equipment to "see" the precise contours of the prepared tooth. 

  • We then take a digital image, using aspecial optical infrared camera that records the tooth's exact dimensions on the CAD/CAM computer. Using this image and the specialized computer software, we carefully design the restoration.

  • We then select the appropriate material in the proper shade for your specific tooth. This material is place in the milling machine, which shapes it into a custom-fitted restoration.

  • We then try in the new restoration. We add any custom coloring as needed, bond or cement the restoration in place, and polish it to a beautiful luster. Last, we check your bite and make any final adjustments.

The benefits of CAD/CAM restorations

  • CAD/CAM restorations have several advantages.

  • They are very accurate.

  • Only a minimum amount of tooth preparation is needed, leaving more of the healthy tooth structure intact. 

  • They usually require only one appointment, even when we're working on more than one tooth.

  • The restorations are made of tooth-colored materials.

 

Crown lengthening

A crown is an excellent way to cover and protect a tooth that has fractured or been damaged by decay or injury. Sometimes, however, the damage is so extensive that there simply isn't enough tooth structure to support a crown. In these cases, we can often use a minor surgical procedure called crown lengthening.  This procedure increases the amount of available tooth structure so that the tooth can support a crown, which is the best choice for covering and protecting the tooth.

The procedure

  • The first step in crown lengthening is to thoroughly numb the entire area.

  • Incisions are made in the gums around the tooth, and then the gums are gently pulled back. 

  • Next, the bone and gum tissue are reshaped to reveal just enough of the natural tooth to create a secure anchor for the crown. The gums are replaced, and a couple of stitches are placed to speed healing. In some cases, we may also build up the tooth using a post and buildup material.

  • After a few weeks of healing, a crown is placed to cover and protect the damaged tooth. The crown restores your damaged tooth to normal health, appearance, and chewing function.

 

Crown lengthening is a predictable and effective way to save a tooth that might otherwise be lost.
